The color of animals is by no means a matter of chance; it depends on many considerations, but in the majority of cases tends to protect the animal from danger by rendering it less conspicuous. Perhaps it may be said that if coloring is mainly protective, there ought to be but few brightly colored animals.

There are, however, not a few cases in which vivid colors are themselves protective. The kingfisher itself, though so brightly colored, is by no means easy to see. The blue harmonizes with the water, and the bird as it darts along the stream looks almost like a flash of sunlight. Desert animals are generally the color of the desert. Thus, for instance, the lion, the antelope, and the wild donkey are all sand-colored. Hence, without exception, the upper plumage of every bird, and also the fur of all the smaller mammals and the skin of all the snakes and lizards, is of one uniform sand color.

The next point is the color of the mature caterpillars, some of which are brown. This probably makes the caterpillar even more conspicuous among the green leaves than would otherwise be the case.

Let us see, then, whether the habits of the insect will throw any light upon the riddle. What would you do if you were a big caterpillar? Why, like most other defenseless creatures, you would feed by night, and lie concealed by day. So do these caterpillars. When the morning light comes, they creep down the stem of the food plant, and lie concealed among the thick herbage and dry sticks and leaves, near the ground, and it is obvious that under such circumstances the brown color really becomes a protection.

It might indeed be argued that the caterpillars, having become brown, concealed themselves on the ground, and that we were reversing the state of things. But this is not so, because, while we may say as a general rule that large caterpillars feed by night and lie concealed by day, it is by no means always the case that they are brown; some of them still retaining the green color. We may then conclude that the habit of concealing themselves by day came first, and that the brown color is a later adaptation.

This question asks you to relate a specific detail to the larger argument and logic of the passage.

Animals inherit their coloration from their parents and pass on the same genes to their offspring. The color of an animal is not coincidental, but is an adaptation developed over time to aid its survival. The coloring of mature caterpillars is very difficult to explain without considering the behavior patterns they exhibit.

This idea is most clearly stated by the author in the opening sentence where he says, "The color of animals is by no means a matter of chance; it depends on many considerations. Because the barren, sparse environment of the desert ensures a lack of natural protection and cover.

This question requires that you to pay attention to details and be able to interpret a small portion of text. In the relevant section, the author says, "in the desert, where neither trees, brushwood, nor even undulation of the surface afford the slightest protection to its foes, a modification of color assimilated to that of the surrounding country is absolutely necessary.

Understanding the reasoning behind this specific detail reveals an understanding of the overall logic of the passage. There is little tonal inflection one way or another, so answering this question is probably most easily done by eliminating answer choices that are definitely incorrect. Let me say this clearly: Becky stole the money.Directions : Read the following passage carefully and answer the questions given below it.

A couple of weeks ago I was asked what I thought the future of technology in education was. It is a really interesting question and one that I am required to think about all the time. By its very nature, technology changes a fast pace and making it accessible to pupils, teachers and other stakeholders is an ongoing challenge.

For me, the future is not about one specific device. In fact, I have just finished a trial to see if using them really does support teaching and learning — and they have proved effective. Perhaps it will be wearable devices such an Google Glass, although I suspect that tablets will still be used in education.

The future is about access, anywhere learning and collaboration, both locally and globally. Teaching and learning is going to be social. Schools of the future could have a traditional cohort of students, as well as online only students who live across the country or even the world.

Things are already starting to move this way with the emergence of massive open online courses moocs. For me, the future of technology in education is the cloud. Technology can often be a barrier to teaching and learning.

I think the cloud will go a long way to removing this barrier. By removing the number of things that can go wrong. Schools, will only need one major thing to be prepared for the future. They will not need software installed, servers or local file storage. Schools will need a fast robust internet connection.

Infrastructure is paramount to the future of technology in education. What we do know, is that it will need the cloud.Reading Skills get sharpened by unseen passage reading comprehension test.

Legends will tell you that flamingoes are no ordinary visitors to Kutch. They were the honoured guests of King Lakho and he had forbidden the hunting of flamingoes, which came to Kutch from various parts of the world every year to breed. For centuries, the region had been a haven for the migratory bird.

Today, Flamingo City, an island in the middle of the Rann of Kutch, known the world over as one of the biggest breeding grounds of the. Greater Flamingo is strewn with bodies of hundreds of flamingo chicks.

The parents of these chicks have fled the island due to lack of food. Zooplanktons, algae and the small fish that these birds survive on are dying due to a sudden increase in the salinity of the Rann waters.

One can even see dead fish floating. Flamingoes need salt-encrusted, damp mud to build nests. The place where they build their nests has to be inaccessible to predatory cats and birds.

It should also have sufficient food. The right mix of sweet and brackish water in the Rann is crucial for the proliferation of planktons and algae that the flamingoes feed on.

Faced with starvation flamingoes have fled the island leaving their chicks to fend for themselves. Till date around a thousand flamingoes have died. Maharaj Kumari Himmat Singhji, a member of the royal family of Kutch and an expert on the birds of Kutch, traces the problem of increased salinity in the Rann waters to the construction of dams on rivers that flow into the region.

He emp hasises that effort should be made to ensure that, at least some water flows into the Rann. In fact over the years, the number of flamingoes coming to the island has decreased because of the change in salinity of the Rann water. InSalim Ali, the late ornithologist, had found 5 lakh birds on the island. Since then, the number has not gone above 2. However, the studies carried out on the Flamingo City so far cannot be taken as per cent accurate because very few ornithologists have conducted regular studies on flamingoes in the area.

The reason: the terrain is so inhospitable that it is simply not possible to visit the place every year. Answer the following questions in short. Why do Ornithologists find it difficult to conduct regular studies on flamingos in the Rann?
