However, you can customize the default new tab page a bit not muchset the New Tab page to a blank page, choose a custom URL to display, or install an extension that adds functionality to the New Tab page. Read on to find out what works best for you.

Add custom buttons to Chrome's toolbar

The only way you can customize the default New Tab page is by deleting tiles from the page. A message displays at the bottom of the New Tab page that the thumbnail was removed. The tiles are created from your browsing history. When a tile is deleted, the associated link in your browsing history is not deleted.

There are two simple extensions that will give you a blank New Tab page. Unlike Blank New Tab Page, this extension will show you a blank page with your bookmarks bar along the top. However, this is not a built-in feature in Chrome, so we need to install an extension. The simplest one we found that works well is New tab URL. We previously recommended the Replace New Tab Page extension, but it no longer exists.

We tested out several extensions that enhance the New Tab page and found one, called Humble New Tab Pagethat has several useful features that display on a new tab in a simple, easy-to-use layout. It displays items such as your bookmarks, most visited sites, apps, recent bookmarks, recently closed tabs, and even the weather.

Install the Humble New Tab Page extension, open a new tab, and then click the small wrench icon in the upper-right corner of the page to access the Options. A popup window with four tabs displays on the right side of the page. The Settings tab allows to change Settings at the top, choose which Content to display on the New Tab page, and specify a location and Celsius or Fahrenheit for the weather, if you choose to display that.

There is a button on the toolbar that provides access to the Options popup window as well. You can change the look and style using the Appearance tab. Set the font, colors, layout, highlights, and animation. You can even choose your own background image. If you want to use this extension in another profile or on another computer, you can back up your settings. Select the text in the Export Settings box, copy it, paste it into a text file, and save it.

To restore your settings, copy the settings from the text file and pasted the text into the Import Settings box. For those of you who have experience with cascading style sheets, you can use them to further customize the look of the New Tab page.

You can also rearrange the items on the page by dragging and dropping them. You can even create additional columns by dragging and dropping an item until you see a vertical black line. There are many other extensions available in the Chrome Web Store that allow you to customize the New Tab page in various ways. The Best Tech Newsletter Anywhere. I would like to create what appears as a toolbar along the top of the page when you click the extension icon, much like the StumbleUpon toolbar. Although this answer shows two ways to create a toolbar in Chrome, I strongly recommend using page action or browser action badges. These do not take as much space as toolbars, and can also be used to show a panel on click, and even get temporary host permissions to interact with the page.

And for those who do not really need a toolbar, but a sidebar, there is an active proposal for a chrome. This is just a proposal, whether and when it will be implemented is not set in stone yet. You have to insert code in the page, and even modify the structure of the document, which could break some pages on the internet.

Step 1 is easy, see my previous example or read the documentation of content scripts. To minimize styling conflicts, and to prevent the page from using your toolbar, insert an iframe.

Unlike the previous method, you do not directly have access to the extension API because the embedded page is neither a content script, nor a page running in the extension's process. Now create a file called toolbar. This file is going to used at the spot of the toolbar, feel free to do anything non-evil with it. Just keep in mind that it acts like a normal web page, it literally does not have access to any of the Chrome APIs.

So far, you've only added a frame to the page.

There's one problem: The content on the page is partially hidden. That is not very nice. There are several ways to fix this, I choose to use CSS transformsbecause it's relatively easy to use, and most pages don't use this property on the body element.

Unfortunately, Chrome treats the embedded html page as a non-privileged extension page. You can only use some of the extension APIs similar to content scripts.During these challenging times, we guarantee we will work tirelessly to support you.
