Earl G. The Section of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery offers a one-year internship for dentists who are interested in gaining an additional year of education and experience in oral and maxillofacial surgery beyond that which is taught during dental school. This is an excellent program for those dentists who are interested in becoming oral and maxillofacial surgeons, but who desire further experience prior to beginning a formal residency training program.

The intern receives similar education, training, and responsibilities as that of an oral and maxillofacial surgery resident in the first year of a six-year program please refer to Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Residency program.

However, this one-year program cannot be counted toward completion of a formal certificate program.

The internship offers strong clinical training, covering the full scope of oral and maxillofacial surgery. A considerable component of training is devoted to the presentation of clinically-oriented basic scientific material. Integrated with the superb clinic training, strong didactic teaching is also emphasized in the curriculum. The scientific background of oral and maxillofacial surgical practice is featured in seminars, lectures, and conferences throughout the year.

Lecture courses are offered in the areas of internal medicine, physical diagnosis, oral pathology, head and neck radiation therapy, dental implantology, and head and neck anatomy including clinically relevant cadaveric dissection.

All students from dental schools accredited by the American Dental Association Council on Education, who will have completed their third year requirements at the time of the desired elective participation, are eligible to apply.

Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Internship

Students must be in good academic standing at their parent school and must have their school's approval to participate in the desired elective s. Visiting students are permitted to enroll for a continuous week Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery elective at the School of Dental Medicine during their fourth year. These applications are available from the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery by writing to the address, below. The application must contain all requested information from both the student and the appropriate dean of the student's school, including original signatures.

Incomplete applications will be returned to the student's Student Affairs Office. The application should be mailed before May Upon receipt the completed application will be reviewed and the student applicant notified about acceptance status. All students must be covered by malpractice or liability insurance verified by their dean of students.

Applicants must provide proof of personal health insurance. We accept no liability for health costs incurred by visiting students while at this school. The ideal candidate utilizes this one year opportunity to immerse themselves in an experience that comes as close to a real OMS residency as possible. Interns participate in all clinical and didactic activities of the program.
