Pro tools xeon vs i7

Following the recent announcement of the Mac Proand the comments that some people think that the Mac Pro 7,1 is too expensive for a lot of Pro Tools users and our look at the possible costs of a Mac Pro 7,1 based Pro Tools computer, in this article we are going to look at the different options for each Apple Mac computer model and explore which could be the most suitable as a Pro Tools computer.

How to Keep Pro Tools 12 from Running Out of CPU Power

We will look at each Apple Mac computer, its strengths and weaknesses as a potential Pro Tools computer together two costed options, a basic option and a superior option. The Mac mini has always been a great low cost option as a Pro Tools computer. However the Mac mini was unloved for a long time because of the low processor count until recently. Although there was a 4-core server version for a while, which at the time made a very cost effective Pro Tools computer, Apple chose to discontinue that model, but because it was so good as a basic Pro Tools computer the 4-core server version was a sought-after computer on the secondhand market.

However, in terms of a new Mac mini, we were left with 2-core Mac minis for a number of years until Apple announced the Mac mini We had heard reports from some Pro Tools users who are already using the Mac mini in studios, some in Hollywood post facilities suggesting that the small footprint and price may belie the power an some had said it might be a viable alternative to a Mac Pro Late with similar performance. By this stage we were getting lot of feedback from community members that the Mac mini was an excellent Pro Tools computer….

Being a student late bloomer at 34 years young I was able to get a discount on my Apple order. I have had zero issues with heat or CPU throttling. It can handle any session that I throw at it. Whether it be tracking or editing or mixing. Personally I would highly recommend to anyone thinking about picking one of these up to just do it.

But as with all things Apple, spend the extra money and get a large enough internal storage so you're not constantly battling space on your OS drive. I no longer have to freeze tracks, which I was doing constantly on the Mac Pro cheese-grater. However, the graphics are where the Mac Mini will fall down if I intend on doing any video or graphics intensive work, so in that case I will definitely require an eGPU.

Tracking at lower buffer sizes 32 and 64 samples also works surprisingly well. Avid has stated that there are known CPU performance issues when working at lower buffer sizes. We then asked community member Simon Nakra to share his experiences of using a Mac mini Simon had been running a 5. One Community Member's Experience. With all delhi to agra road project interest in the Mac mini we had been asked by many people to take a look at it to see if the claims of it being 'awesome' or that the 'USB2 audio is broken' are true.

There's some merit in other reviews and also in anecdotal evidence from forums and social media, but to be frank, the only way to get to the facts was to test it ourselves and so we purchased Yes we paid for it a Mac mini with the following configuration…. Not only did we test this Mac mini on its own we also benchmarked it against a Mac Pro Late and also a 12 Core Mac Pro 5,1 to give you a sense of the power under the hood of the Mac mini For the Basic model we are going for the 3.

For the superior model we are going for the 3. By adding one of the Sonnet expansion chassis you can put together a very cost effective HDX 1 system and we have plans to take our Mac mini and test it with an expansion chassis to see how it performs.

However there are a number of caveats and limitations for each of these configurations so please check our article or the Pro Tools System Requirements pages for more information. In this article, we explore what Apple would need to do to the Mac mini to make it even better than the Mac mini model. We have the details…. We've been asked by many people to take a look at the Mac mini to see if the claims of it being 'awesome' on the one hand or that the 'USB2 audio is broken' are true.

There's some merit in other reviews and also in anecdotal evidence from forums and social media, but to be frank, the only way to get to the facts is to test it ourselves. Not only have we tested this Mac mini on its own but benchmarked it against a Mac Pro Late to give you a sense of the power under the hood of the Mac mini Designed and built from the ground up for Pro Tools.

Drawing from over 30 years of industry experience. There has never been a machine so focused on providing the perfect Pro Tools experience. Pro Tools as a piece of software should be able to run on any compatible computer — and it can.

However your Pro Tools experience relies on the computer being able to handle very complex and resource heavy functions, that are far beyond what it has to accomplish when running Word or surfing the Internet. Recording, mixing and processing multiple tracks of high definition audio, while generating sounds in response to virtual instruments is no easy task and draws on all elements of a computer system, not only this but Pro Tools has traditionally been extra picky about the specific system design setup and integration that even a system that works fine for some other DAW's still wont cut the grade for a Pro Tools rig.

Audio PC manufacturers exist because people have trouble running audio software on regular computers. User groups and forums exists because people have trouble running Pro Tools on regular computers. The Pro Tools PC settles the issue once and for all. And for total unadulterated brute power we now have multi-processor systems that allow for 12, 16, 20 and 24 physical cores for dealing with the most intense sessions and elaborate compositions without compromise. To access more cores we have integrated new motherboards and so each system varies in the exact features they carry. USB 3. You have to love that rack mount chassis. However, it should be noted that The Pro Tools PC actually needs 5U of space in a rack as the chassis is designed to fit with a half U space at the top and bottom.

You can pick up a pair of half U blank panels from our store to finish off the look of a made to measure system.

Like all digital audio workstation software, Pro Tools can perform the functions of a multitrack tape recorder and audio mixer, along with additional features that can only be performed in the digital domain, such as non-destructive editing, using the Undo feature, which allows an engineer to undo any changes.

For digital audio production, it is beneficial to have more processor cores rather than a higher clockspeed per core. For example, if you select a single core processor, 32GB will suffice for basic tasks or 64GB for more demanding workloads. In general, we recommend a two to four drive configuration depending on your budget and desired performance level:.

This application doesn't utilize or makes slight use of GPU acceleration, so a high-end graphics card is not required. Therefore, we recommend a Quadro P The HP Z6 G4 Workstation is recommended if you would like to start with a single high-end processor and single high-performance graphics card with the potential of upgrading in the future.

With the Z6 G4, you can add a second matching processor and double the memory using the optional second processor riser. The power supply will also support two mid-range graphics cards.

Since Intel now produces single Core i9 and Xeon processors with up to cores and high clock speed, there is no need for dual processors unless you will have heavy CPU rendering or intensive tasks demanding more than cores. Work with up to audio tracks with a single card system or up to audio tracks with three cards. Mix up to ins and outs. Get the power to run volumes more plug-ins. And take on projects of any size and scope with complete confidence. The recommended components and configurations provided on this page are specific to this software.

Pro Tools Pro Tools is a digital audio workstation developed and released by Avid Technology and can be used for a wide range of sound recording and sound production purposes.I often stop and think about how amazing it is that nowadays there is a mathematical algorithm that can emulate almost any physical process or device — all the gear in the world can and probably has a plug-in simulation somewhere out there.

Of course, like any great thing, it comes with a cost. The amount of calculus a computer performs when running Pro Tools and plug-ins within Pro Tools is just crazy and the processing power needed for the program to operate flawlessly is quite extensive.

So how much number crunching power do you need in your processor? This is where things get confusing. Do you need a processor that could power a small server or is that a bit exaggerated for your setup? It really depends on what kind of work you do with Pro Tools but I can say, with quite a lot of confidence, that a processor such as the Xeon is an overkill, whatever Pro Tools setup you put it in.

When buying a Pro Tools processor, judging the performance by the number of cores and the clocking speed might trick you. And each of these runs at a very respectable 3.

On the other hand the Intel only has four running at 2. This means it must be slower, right? Well, no. The minimum requirements take you a long way as I previously shown in another article check it out here. You can run some pretty extensive sessions on an i5 without worrying about CPU overload. My most extensive session on my Acer EG with 8 GB of RAM and an i5 processor had over 28 audio tracks filled with native and third party plug-ins, about 15 Instrument tracks with virtual instruments instantiated and about 8 Auxiliary tracks.

That is definitely not a super large session but it is more than most users ever do. And it ran flawlessly. I sincerely recommend using an i5 to people who work with Pro Tools as a hobby. If you are ever thinking about going professional, or want a high performance home studio setup, I recommend looking at the i7 series from the Intel CPU family. There are a lot of variants of the Intel i7 processor so where should one start looking when buying a CPU for Pro Tools? With four cores, 6 mb of Smart Cache Memory and a cool 3.

This is a great processor for multitasking and it is fantastically speedy — it only has one drawback: when running maxed out on all cores for extended periods of time it heats up and performance decreases. However, just running Pro Tools will never make it heat up as you will never come close to maxing out the CPU if you are not running any other resource consuming software.

This fantastic processor from Intel has four 3. The Quick Path Interconnect technology provides very fast data transfer between the processor and chipset while the Smart Cache Memory technology increases available RAM resources in order to reduce lag when multitasking. It works great with Pro Tools due to its fantastic multitasking capabilities — with a processor like this I do not think you will ever have to stress about CPU resources running out while working on large sessions ever again.

This is another multi-tasking beast.

With this processor you get six 3.One of the most common questions we get when custom configuring a PC for a customer is which platform they should go with — Xeon or i7. This equates to free power and more value, a feature that Xeons do not have. For example an 8-core ik running at 3. On board graphics — Aside from the new F skus, Core i7 and i5 processors all come with onboard graphics, meaning a discrete video card is not required for video display, whereas Xeon processor-based PCs cannot be configured without discrete video.

Though we recommend a discrete card for anything beyond the most casual gaming or video work, on board graphics are suitable for many home office uses. L3 cache — CPU caches are like small batches of memory that the processor keeps close by to speed up certain applications.

Most Xeon processors have MB of L3 cache depending on the model, close to double their i7 counterparts, though that gap seems to close with each new i7 architecture.

The new Xeon Scalable processors max out at 24 cores 48 after Hyperthreading whereas even the iXE has Longevity under heavy load — Xeon processors are qualified to handle heavier, more intensive loads day in and day out.

For the serious workstation user, this can translate to better longevity over i7 counterparts. Hyperthreading at a lower pricepoint — Most of the advantages of Xeon processors come to users in a higher price range, but not this one. Since all Xeons come with Hyperthreading — a process essentially doubling the CPU cores through the creation of virtual cores — and i5 processors do not, many users shopping in this price range may find the Xeons to be a better value, assuming their specific application supports these virtual cores.

Which Apple Mac Should You Choose As A Pro Tools Computer? Specs And Prices

Bio Latest Posts. Sorry, Ringo. Latest posts by Josh Covington see all.Mac Pro. On my Mac Pro Xeon 6-Core, 64gb ram everything feels sluggish very quickly 30min sequence, barely any soundeffects. An i7 iMac stays much more response with the very same sequence. But the more complex and longer the sequence gets more sound effects etc.

Which CPU should I pick and why? Has anyone of you ever compared the two types using media composer? I like the i9 with high core count.

pro tools xeon vs i7

Extremely fast. A good rule of thumb - if money is no object, Xeons are worth considering. If you care about the best "bang-for-the buck", don't even bother looking at a Xeon.

The math will just never work. I say go for the xe or the refreshed model xe. Puget Systems did a benchmark test between all the i9 processors and found that the x hit the sweet spot out-performing the xe for transcoding and warp stabilizing tasks in Premiere.

Not sure how this relates to performance in MC but it's interesting to look at their results. I'm building a system around the x at the moment. Should be a step up from my i7 I don't think they overclock at all.

And a motherboard overclocks very simply with presets in the bios. I recently switched motherboards and havent had the chance to overclock. I can probably go to 4. But thats Avid's old coding, not the cpu's fault. Good luck with your choice. But their return policy is horrific crazy restocking fees and no price adjusting if it goes on sale. And here is an export with a conservative overclock of 4. My cpu temps are OK checking with core temp. This is a with an matx evga x board. I sometimes have it in a 2u rackmount with a low profile ti but this is with my ti.
