Sgdq 2020

Live to nearly 50 thousand viewers on TwitchNoseJones and his commentators, JohnnyThaGod, BumHoboKarl and Moose73 delivered an unforgettable minute experience of this horrendously broken game. While the run itself was solid, beating the estimated time by a little over four minutes, it was the commentary and technical difficulties that so many will remember this speedrun for.

The audio and video quality of the run, while not great, added to the experience so much. As the video quality got better, the ramblings got weirder and weirder. It sounded straight out of a skit. Immediately from the introduction of the runner and commentators, Moose began dry heaving, coughing loudly and blowing his nose into the microphone, a bit which carried through the full duration of the run.

It was during the cutscene that the run tone was set with the abysmal video quality and constant apologies. The host was met with something unforeseen in GDQ runs: a harsh, incredibly awkward "No". The entirety of the run was a disaster, likely an intentional disaster to garner attention, but it was executed beautifully. Speedrun fans all over loved the run for how much of a mess it was, though it's unfortunately very likely that we won't be seeing any more from NoseJones in future GDQs because of it.

Yono is a game that I had never heard of before now, and boy am I glad that speedrunner Bullets was able to show the game off at SGDQ day three. This absolutely adorable indie game features a cosmic elephant, stomping cutesy 2D environments while avoiding enemies and solving light puzzles. If you have a spare 15 minutes, check out this run.

On top of that, the Silent Hill franchise has gotten the short end of the stick for the past few years, so fans of this horror franchise deserve a tiny win if not a major one. Thankfully, speedrunner shmumbler took Silent Hill: Homecoming to task in the early morning hours of SGDQ day three, defeating every boss while barely busting a sweat. If you like creepy enemies, clipping glitches, and affable commentary, give this run a watch.

Considering how many times I attempted to play Quest 64 and failed, watching runner Bingchang smash through this old-school N64 title was especially satisfying.

Even when compared to the slew of other classic games on display at SGDQ day three, this run of Quest 64 provided ample levels of nostalgia and some consistently entertaining gameplay and commentary.

To transition the marathon from morning to afternoon, speedrunner d4gr0n took over things with two awesome speedruns. Although their run of the lesser-known Genesis classic Pulseman was also well worth the watch, the Super Turrican run provided a bit more action and excitement. Generally speaking, Super Turrican is an ultra-tough side-scrolling action game, similar to Contra and the like. If you want some bit speedrun fun without a huge time commitment, check out this run of Super Turrican.

That said, I always find Bloodstained: Curse of the Moonthe Castlevania -inspired indie that was released into be a more visually entertaining speedrun. Using the minimal amount of upgrades and character unlocks as possible, Starwin gave Curse of the Moon a run for its money, beating it without even losing a life. As a Tony Hawk game, Underground is far more narrative-driven than the previous games, offering a different pace than most other runs in the series.

The goofy story mode was easily bested by runner Biglaw, who butt-slapped and kick-flipped his way through the game in just over 36 minutes. There was excellent commentary and plenty of memorable moments throughout the run, and despite a few unfortunate bails and missed tricks, Biglaw skated away with a decent time.

The Legend of Zelda games are pillars of the speedrunning community, right alongside Super MarioPortaland plenty of other classic games. The over 3-hour long run was executed with impressive precision and skill by gymnast86, who has emerged as one of my favorite Zelda runners in the past few years.

Calm, collected, and consistently able to provide clean and easy-to-understand commentary, gymnast86 is one of the best runners around. If you feel like making a contribution, be sure to head over to the Games Done Quick website and show your support! Those are our picks for the best speedruns of SGDQ day three! Like his Shovel Knight: King of Cards run from SGDQ day one, this speedrun was packed with unique gameplay, retro visuals, and heartwarming family fun. Baba Is You is an incredibly unique puzzle game that sees you controlling a small, pixelated character named Baba. Speedrunner Punchy expertly demonstrated all of those skills with impressive speed, clicking away at the speed of sound.

Many puzzles were solved in mere seconds, barely giving the viewer time to comprehend the challenge at hand. Luckily, Punchy is a runner who is well-known for his gleeful energy and calculated commentary, always keeping the viewer engaged and informed. This is easily one of the best speedruns of the entire SGDQ marathon, so be sure to check it out.

Speedruns of Super Monkey Ball games are arguably some of the speediest available, even when compared to the likes of Sonic the Hedgehog. You guide your monkey in a ball through obstacle courses, attempting to reach the goal at the end. Stages start out easy and straightforward, but soon become absolute death-traps, littered with incredibly punishing hazards and ultra-tough level layouts. Runner PetresInc showed off their inhuman speed and reaction time by blazing through every level in just over 30 minutes.

PetresInc used buffered, frame-perfect strategies to send himself flying across plenty of stages, resulting in some extremely tense moments. The race featured three of the best Super Mario Bros speedrunners in the world, so I expected some high-skill gameplay.

Those expectations were far surpassed.

Runner touhoe showed off this release with impressive skill, only making a few mistakes along the way. Runner kykystas helped keep SGDQ day four speedy with their run of Neon Boostan appropriately colorful first-person speedgame.

Similar to games like ClusterTruckNeon Boost simply tasks players with swiftly navigating through short, hazard-filled stages. Unlike ClusterTruck though, Neon Boost almost entirely revolves around the rocket-jump mechanic, with players boosting themselves to astronomical heights by shooting at their feet. Using this titular boost, kykystas blasted through the game in under 10 minutes, resulting in a wonderfully colorful and entertaining run.

Not only did Wario Land on the Virtual Boy exceed my expectations, but so did this speedrun. By dealing out consistent headshots and speedy stealth kills, AnthonyCaliber was able to cap off the normally dozen-plus hour game in just a handful of hours.

With appropriate speed for a Sonic game, TheSoundDefense spin-dashed, clipped, and hopped through the game with exceptional levels of swag and style. From his impressive skills in the orb mini-games to the expertly-executed glitches and tricks, TheSoundDefense had a truly fantastic run.
